Daingean
Posted on Friday, May 5, 2006Not everybody will want to know about this, but for those who do, check out the Vincent Browne show of the last few days. I’m not normally given to this level of hyperbole, so believe me when I say to you that I can’t remember ever hearing such powerful radio as the Vincent Browne shows of Tuesday and Wednesday nights. I haven’t been able to get the Wednesday url yet, but I’ll put it up later when RTE publish it. In the meantime, here’s Tuesday’s show, with Mannix Flynn.
Listen to it, but have a good stiff Jameson first.

In 1968 Daingean’s Resident Manager Fr McGonagle told visiting members of the Kennedy committee, “openly and without embarrassment”, how boys were beaten on the buttocks with a leather strap. Asked why he allowed boys to be stripped naked for punishment, he replied, “in a matter of fact way”, that he considered punishment to be more humiliating when it was administered in that fashion. The Department of Justice representative on the committee signed the final Kennedy report only on condition that the Daingean punishments ceased. The published report contained no reference to the practice. Peter Berry, secretary of the Department of Justice, deemed that such disclosure would have caused “a grave public scandal”.
