Limerick Travellers’ Protest

Oct 25th, 2006 | By Bock | Category: Crime

I see the Caseys held a protest outside City Hall because the Corpo wants to move them to allow construction of a 13-foot-high security wall separating them from the Galvone industrial estate. Now why on earth would a wall like that be necessary? I can’t imagine.

Some uncharitable people in Limerick are suggesting that the Caseys have been protecting these industrial units for a long time and feel rejected because the business people who operate the units don’t want their protection anymore. Obviously, anyone would feel hurt when something like that happens, and Caseys have feelings too. It certainly seems a bit insensitive of the business people to build a thirteen-foot wall when a simple phone call would probably have done the trick.

The poor Caseys have had a bad press over the years, and for good measure, here’s some more, taken from blogs and newspaper sites. I hope the original authors won’t mind too much.

Limerick man found guilty of barman murder
08 January 2002
A 38-year-old man found guilty of the murder of a Limerick barman in 1997 has been described by Garda as one of the most violent criminals the city has ever seen. Raymond Casey was found guilty of the murder of Noel Pyper. The co-accused, 21-year-old Anthony Casey, was also found guilty of murder. The 48-year-old barman was kicked to death in a lane during the early hours of 12 August.

Mr Pyper, who was suffering from an advanced stage of throat cancer, was described as a quiet man who “wouldn’t say boo to a fly”.

Truck hijackers plead guilty
Four members of the Travelling Community have pleaded guilty to unlawfully seizing a truck and assaulting its driver at Castletroy, Co Limerick on September 2, 2003.

Patrick and Martin Casey of Old Cork Road, Limerick and John and James Casey of Clonlong Halting Site, Limerick pleaded guilty to the hijacking of a truck from Willie O’Neill, Newport Co. Tipperary, and to assaulting O’Neill on the date in question.

The court heard that the four men were returning from a funeral, when they hijacked the truck and trailer driven by O’Neill. O’Neill was waiting at traffic lights in Castletroy when one of the defendants walked up to the lorry and gestured that he was looking for a lift. He then saw a second man get into his cab. Under duress O’Neill was forced to drive in the direction of Annacotty. All four men were arrested shortly after the incident.

Judge Carroll adjourned sentencing until April 19, and asked for probation reports to be compiled in the meantime.

UTV News Sunday, December 18, 2005
A Circuit Court Judge is expected to be shown TV footage of a Limerick man threatening to kill another man in O’Malley Park in March this year.

Former TV3 correspondent Alan Campbell was interviewing Southill man Anthony Kelly when a man was caught on camera shouting abuse at and threatening Mr. Kelly. 29 year-old Timmy Casey with an address at Clonlong, Southill pleaded guilty to making the threat against the brother of the former City Alderman, Michael Kelly.

Irish Examiner, 16th July 2001
A WITNESS in a case, in which two brothers were accused of breaking three windows in his house, denied yesterday at Limerick District Court that he was intimidated or was under pressure to lie.Laurence McCarthy was giving evidence in the case against Simon Casey, 20, and James Casey, 24, of Clonlong, Southill, Limerick, who are charged with smashing windows at his Old Cork Road home.

During the hearing, solicitor John Devane said Ald Michael Kelly had brokered a peace agreement between families. He did not ask anybody to withdraw their statements.

Mr McCarthy said he was watching TV at his home when the windows came in around him around 11.15pm. He said at the time it was the Casey family who smashed the windows. But, yesterday, in court he said: “I now know they did not break the windows. I made a bad mistake. I picked the wrong people.”

Garda Inspector Jim Browne asked Judge Tom O’Donnell to treat Mr McCarthy as a hostile witness.

Limerick man gets 11 years for rape
A Limerick man is behind bars today after he pleaded guilty to aggravated sexual assault and assault causing harm to a woman in Galway back in 2004.

43-year-old Edward Casey (a brother of Raymond Casey who murdered barman Noel Pyper) from O’Malley Park was sentenced yesterday to 11 years jail. Giving evidence during the case, Det Sgt Michael Coppinger told how DNA matches from blood on the suspects discarded clothes and sperm recovered from the victim led to the conviction of Mr Casey.

Also speaking during the case, the victim a 23-year-old woman said;

“Not only was I denied my human rights but I was violated both mentally and physically and left with permanent scars that will affect my life forever”.

She also added that her life has been a living hell for her and her family  “a life of fear, hurt, humiliation, anger and distrust”.

Mr Justice Carney certified Mr. Casey for registration as a sex offender.

Poor old Caseys, fine upstanding citizens that they are. Everybody is against them, and it’s all society’s fault.

The Limerick Traveller Development Group, who quite properly take no position on the matter of rape or murder, are right. It’s your fault and my fault that the Casey family has produced a string of murderers, rapists and thugs. Somehow or other, you and I have let them down.

We must do better in the future for these poor people. After all, there are 200 Casey men who all have to share the same head.

  1. Raymond Casey & Edward Casey, while a pair of evil bastards, are different caseys to the clonlong crowd, from keyes park i think.

  2. Fuck those Casey cunts

  3. I know both Edward and Raymond Casey. They are not evil bastard. They are victims of an uncaring society. They are victims of the Garda, who have been kicking the shit of them since they were kids. They are victims of the Catholic Church, who abused both of them as children. There’s two sides to every story.

  4. Are you saying they never committed a violent crime?

  5. Jesus, we all know they committed violent crimes. But what about the violent crimes the Gardai and The Catholic Church commit. And they’re still doing it. Is that not important in your narrow little mind. Eddie is doing an 11 year sentences for rape. At least the girl he assaulted can go into life with some kind of closure. How many priests are in jail? NONE. Their victims have to live life without even hearing the word ‘I’m sorry’. Look at the attitude the Gardai have toward woman. How many 6ft plus guys assault woman. And worse still, get a kick out of it.I suggest you take a good hard l look at the full picture before you judge.

  6. I’ll say this slowly so you’ll understand it.

Nobody forced them to commit rape or murder.

Have you got that? Nobody forced them to rape or murder people.

    They did it themselves.

Let me try to make this plainer: they are responsible for their own actions.

There’s never an excuse for raping or murdering someone, and your attempt to spread the blame for such crimes is a disgrace.

In case you missed it earlier, I’ll tell you again: there is no excuse for rape. Ever.

    Got that?

(By the way, if you want to read about clerical or police abuse, I suggest you read the rest of this site before shouting the next time)

  7. You don’t have to say anything slowly to me, or you dont have to repeat yourself either. I think you’re the one with the spelling difficulity, not me! Right, there is no excuse for murder or rape. But, Im afraid, lot, and lots of reasons. Reasons which I think I pointed out. Faceless, small brained people like you just wouldn’t understand that.

  8. In case you missed it earlier, I’ll tell you again: there is no excuse for rape. Ever.

    Got that?
I suggest you keep your bully tactics for someone you just might frighten. I

have a right to my opiion. I’m a woman from Hyde Rd, Prospect. I’m strong enough to express them

  9. You always know you’re losing it when you have to sink to personal comments. Deal with the point and keep the insults to yourself.

These guys are rapists and murderers. They, and nobody else, are responsible for what they did.

Any abuse they suffered in their earlier lives is also a crime, and the perpetrators should be punished, but it does not reduce their personal responsibility.

    They did the crimes.

What does your address have to do with this discussion?

  10. Losing!!!! What? Is this what we’re at. I merely expressed my opinion. When it comes to victims of society. There ARE no winners or losers. We all become victims.
Abused people will alway find a way to release their anger. Rape, Murder, is the way Ray and Eddie choose to do it. That’s life! Full Stop.

  11. You stumbled across the important point there: they chose to do what they did. It was a matter of personal choice.

Now, I haven’t heard the suggestionbefore that rape and murder are a way of releasing anger.

    There’s a thought.

I’m angry. Think I’ll go and rape someone.

Brilliant. When you’re a victim you can do whatever you like. It isn’t your fault.

I must contact the poor girl and tell her she was actually raped by society. And then maybe I’ll contact the dead man’s family and tell them he was murdered by the Catholic church.

  12. Murder or Rape isn’t something you chose to do. Murder or Rape is somethink you DO. I think you’ve miss the point here, yourself.

Again, I didn’t say it wasn’t their fault. I’m saying they were victimes themselves. And victims become abuser. It’s one big circle.

I must contact the poor girl and tell her she was actually raped by society. And then maybe I’ll contact the dead man’s family and tell them he was murdered by the Catholic church.

    Maybe you should!!!!!!!!

  13. Murder and rape are not involuntary actions. They are deliberate crimes, and your rapist friends could just as easily have chosen not to do what they did.

f you want to look at the factors that made these men into rapists and murderers, that’s fine, as long as you don’t try to shift the emphasis away from their responsibility.

While they might well be victims of earlier crimes, they are also violent criminals who committed terrible acts. One of them took away a man’s life and the other violated a girl’s bodily integrity, leaving permanent emotional scars as well as physical pain.

Spin it any way you like but that’s the reality.

  14. I live a full life, sorry I didn’t get back to top this topic up.

We could argue this point until the cows come home. We both see things from a different prospective.

You put the blame on the apple, whereas, I blame the tree.
