Soccer: the Good, the Bad and the Stupid
Posted on Saturday, October 7, 2006I watched a game of football on the telly today. It was a high-scoring match in which an underdog team inflicted a surprising and humiliating defeat on a theoretically much stronger opponent. This has led to acrimony, recrimination and demands for the manager to resign. I was glad, for their own sake, that two Irish players scored goals.
Later today, I also watched Staunton’s team of blundering idiots being hammered by Cyprus, but of course I was referring here to Scunthorpe’s 4-0 defeat of Nottingham Forest. The bums are now third in the league after a truly superb display of football in which they slotted home four clinical and precise goals. Andy Keogh bagged one, as usual and fellow Dubliner Ian Morris banged in another. Fantastic stuff.
I won’t detain you long with the embarrassing debacle in Nicosia during which Ireland’s finest were beaten by an inter-pub team, except to say Resign, Delaney, you fucking langer!!
