Monsters of Rock

Posted on Monday, March 19, 2007

The Bullet started his own band about six months ago, and they’re cool as fuck. They’re all about fourteen or fifteen, they all have long hair and they all wear coats down to their ankles. They’re a kind of death-speed-thrash-metal band specialising in power chords and extreme shouting. They’re such a cool band they have a girl playing bass. As my mate Eamonn said, all they need now is a black drummer.

I bought him an acoustic guitar about three or four years ago, when he was maybe ten or eleven and, although he learned a few chords, he never really took to it. Then last year, he said he wanted an electric guitar and amp for his birthday. Fine. You have to give kids every opportunity, but I have to admit, I had some doubts. When we were going to collect it, I bumped into a friend of mine, The Infant Jesus, who is an absolute motherfucker of a guitarist.

I don’t know, I confessed to him. The Bullet has no idea how to play this thing. What do you reckon?

Play it? said The Infant. Play it? Why the fuck would he want to play it? That can come later. Right now, he needs to learn how to carry it around town with authority.

A great bass playing friend of ours would suggest he needs to get someone else to carry it around town for him….preferably a forlorn looking female….

My firstborn plays the bass in a great band of young fellas also. We have the honour of hosting their practice sessions in our garage………. I might moan here about the decibles, but never to them. I love it that they’re comfortable bringing their friends home to the old fogies.
