With its ever-so-clever ads, which anyone can put on their site and which are somehow, without registering the content of the site, relevant to the page you’re looking at. So, for example, if you’re looking at a page about Spam, there will be ads for spam recipes on the ads or whatever. Then Google takes some money for each click-through. Oh, and of course as this is now THE advertising model on most of the web, they floated the company. That’s how they got all their billions. Christ, I know nothing about this. But it’s late, and I’m really tired, so I’m just kind of pretending I do.
Google charge advertisers pretty heftily. However, they pay pittance to the website owners on which they’re displayed. Their mark up would make a restaurateur envious.
As an advertiser you can pop by google.com and get a cost estimate. As a website owner you can’t. You cannot even verify if your click rate is genuine or not, as it is Google who measure it. The real killer with Google, is that they have a policy whereby any monies paid out can be reclaimed at any time.
Other ad services are few and far between, and not can come near Google penetration. Except maybe doubleclick … Ooops, Google acquired them last week.
The ad scene isn’t a great earner and is becoming less so. Users are ignoring ads. Hence, Google are moving into the here’s a taste, now pay me if you want a plate-full space. e.g. Use Google SketchUp for free. For ever. Want to do more complex work? Ok, then Google will sell you SketchUp Pro.
I prefer the latter strategy. It is transparent to all. And I have to say, their tools (SketchUp, GoogleDocs etc.) are amazing and great value.
