Another blogger moves home

Posted on Wednesday, July 4, 2007

Jesus, they’re all at it these days.

Here’s Brian F’s new home: Rantings Diversified.

You might remember Brian from our little arguments about American gun law.

They may also remember me from my occasional wise crack comment here, the fact I can’t follow instructions or that I run with scissors.

But can someone please summarise for me the benefits of these sorts of moves?

Well, the blogspot thing is a bit of a problem, I suppose. It seems to be perceived as a bit of a spam address, but I don’t know how to quantify that. Blogger in general is a pain in the arse, and entirely unpredictable. Even if you don’t go independent, I think WordPress.com is a far more stable platform with more features and flexibility.

If you want more control over your site, you really need to host it independently. I used the WordPress software, but you could use other stuff if you prefer.

Personally, I thought it was a good move and I’m glad I did it, but on the other hand, there’s a shitload of work involved in moving, and you lose all your rankings.

It boils down to a personal decision. The money involved is very small even if you decide to have your site privately hosted. Very small unless you have to decide between blogging and food.

    Then it’s a lot.
