I was beginning to worry that everyone in the United States had lost the ability to argue coherently without flinging insults at those they disagree with.
But then I came across this civilised man, Harry Taylor, who last year stood up in front of George W Bush, and expressed his disagreement without hurling a single insult or personal comment.
In fairness to Bush, he returned the courtesy by hearing Mr Taylor out without insult or abuse, and for that I would commend him. The people who posted their insults on this site could learn a lot about civilised discourse by watching this video.
Mr Taylor became a bit of an unlikely hero after this incident, and if you want to add your comment to his web site, you can do it here.

I saw that when it happened and cheered, Bock. shrub would have preferred to say go fuck yourself as darth vader did to Senator Leahy but he was in polite company and had to listen to someone who disagreed with him.
I remember that guy too. There are many, many like him in the US but they usually get shouted out of the “debate” by people who can’t control their outbursts any better than my two five-year-olds can, and are only really interested in the sound of their own voices anyway. As if the louder you shout, the blunter the thinking you use – the bigger patriot you must be.
It’s good to see Harry Taylor being feted for calmly and articulately stating his disappointment without name-calling. More power to him and those like him.
Reminds me of a guy I wrote about who asked Rumsfeld a question.
The art of debating never really survives outside of the education system. Everyone is looking for the sound bite the killer punch with out being interested in listening to the reply.
More power to articulate people making a good case for their opinion. Of course when its me arguing in a pub after many pints it is usually less articulate just more thick.
Admirable. But useless.
More worrisome was Current occupant’s response – “When at war…” which the audience, and all of the world have mentally elided since we invaded Iraq – and then the audience applauding the ‘wit’ and ‘reasonableness of Shrub’s response:
We are not at war: the US Congress has not authorized war since 1943;
We invaded and currently occupy a sovereign nation solely on the whimsey of an unelected, recovering
assdrunk .The simple authorization of force issued by the US Congress was delimted in scope and purpose and has long since been achieved, thereby rendering it non-binding.
Reasonable discussions are not going to persuade Shrub to leave Iraq in Jauary when the Iraqi congress votes the US out of the country; reasonable discussions with the Democratic cadidates for President are not going to change their minds about staying in Iraq for another decade, or even 50 years.
The leaders of the US, and the Wannabes, hold their populace in contempt {“So you’re saying I’m not your favorite guy.” ha ha ha} and make little or no pretense at achieving what we elected them to do…
I agree name calling is useless and less than civilized. We already know reason won’t work. That does not leave a lot of pleasant options left if we are to retain what freedoms that haven’t already been stripped from our Constitution…
Just saying…
Well, Doc, I don’t know what the alternative is. You seem to be hinting that Mr Bush might be reluctant to leave office, contrary to your constitution.
That would lead to a very extreme situation, wouldn’t it?

I am at a loss as well.
I have served in my country’s military (twice) and still work for the agrarian portion of the federal government (when I could be making at least double the income) because I believe one does right by themselves, their family and community by serving a larger communal interest…
{No plaudits here – I am no more an admirable person than anyone else, and much less than many. I mention this because the experiences have given me insight into the workings, and therefore frailties, of the US Government that many do not have}
However, reality is very much consensual, especially in the US right now: what Shrub says goes, despite a dearth of popular backing, because the ‘media’ supports him. Well, the humongously rich and grasping owners of the ‘media’ support him…
So the US Congress – lacking any fortitude by definition – is willing to go along to get along. And then later intend to use the short circuits Shrub has wired across our civil rights themselves.
You are right: the situation has the potential to become very explosive.
And that would be good for no one. Period.
All right – the poorer, smaller nations the US has pushed around would enjoy a reprieve.
Until nature interviened: it abhors a vacuum.
I guess I am frustrated beyond anything anyone not a native US citizen can understand – we know what we HAD, what is being stolen from us, what good we could, and have, accomplished with it.
To see Mr. Taylor be dismissed by a sitting President as less than an annoyance, as a hitch in his ‘git-along’ is so heart rending as to be unbearable, regardless of how polite the gentleman was.
And since we do not allow for votes of ‘no-confidence’, we are stuck until Shrub and Cheney leave. If.
If not, holy shit.
That’s what worries me.
Well, I don’t live in your country, and therefore all I can do is ask. Hypothetically, what do you think would happen if Mr Bush decided not to leave the White House?
Hypothetically?
Worst (Best) Case – an insurgency on a scale no one is ready for: the US is the most heavily armed citizenry in the world; the military in many levels is beyond fed up and is populated not by drones, but thinking people; Shrub would not have any support anywhere among the world’s nations – in fact, I can see where France, for example, might financialy(and otherwise) support an insurgency; chaos; many unnecessary deaths; random destruction of our infrastructure that would take decades to restore; the usurpers are ousted…
Best (Worst) Case: people bitch and moan and nothing happens for a generation; the world shuns our nation; we fall into gradual international decline in influence and power; the citizanry migrates anywhere else; the usurpers stay and the dream dies…
Middle Ground: the world calls “Bullshit!” and forces Cheney/Shrub to leave after protracted, behinfd the scenes negotiations that make a year at the UN look like a spring vacation in the Carribean; a UN monitored election is held, ratified and a new administration takes over; the UN continues to keep a presence in the US for a decade…
Hypothetically…
