I remember back in the days right after apartheid was finished and South Africa was allowed back into the international fold. Their team sheet would always have a token black player to prove things were cool…

“And today’s team is as follows…Smith, van der Voort, Wilson, Jones, van Huysteusen, Wallace, Mbatabwele, Botha….”

I was watching young lads in Soweto playing rugby this morning (on TV, while having my cardio-inspired muesli) in a dry pebbly field. They had big hopes and bright eyes. But no money for boots.

Yes he did. Saddam killed Nelson Mandela, and that was what bound the South African team together.

Damn you, Saddam, for helping to defeat the only Home Nation left in the World Cup. Damn you, d’you hear?

Why are they all smiling? It seems a bit unnatural. Fine, strapping young lads all the same, with necks as wide as their heads and a token triangular soul patch. Mr. Mandela will be missed; a tragic, senseless loss.
