The Montreal Expos are no more, have been dead for years. So they cannot beg to differ. There are, however, the Toronto Blue Jays, who have won the World Series. With a team full of Dominicans. So much for an American game. The Canadians own it now. And we no longer accept American dollars.

As an analogy it is inappropriate at every level - it seeks to hang the illegitimacy of the Iraq war on the achievements and unassailable reputation of Nelson Mandela. Mandela is a good guy; Iraq doesn’t have any good guys, because Saddam killed them all; therefore it is Saddam’s fault that there is no savior available to dig the US (and UK) out of the mess that they’ve made. It seeks to align Bush on the side of Mandela and thereby legitimise his atrocious actions in the middle east…. Inappropriate, inappropriate, inappropriate.

The really distasteful aspect of the analogy is the fact that the American Right (of which Buch is undoubtedly either (A) a representative or (B) a puppet) were adamant throughout the period of apartheid that Mandela was a terrorist and that the ANC was a terrororist organisation. The Right’s opposition to boycotts and sanctions against South Africa were littered with attacks on Mandela and the ANC.

Forward wind to the present Iraqi predicament and suddenly the lack of a Mandela is seriously put forward as a reason for the lack of a political solution…

It would be laughable, if it wasn’t so sick - particularly as the Iraqi Mandela or Mandelas (to accept the premise) is as likely to have been killed by the US carpet bombing of Iraq or by the US Army’s indiscriminant killing of civilians (which have killed more Iraqis than ever died by the hand of Saddam) than he is to have been killed by Saddam Hussein…

The vitriol poured on you, Bock, is to be expected, unfortunately. Stick to your guns; seeking to intimidate anyone with views contrary to the prevailing doctrine is the American Way - their history is littered with the suppression of dissent.

Second off…I won’t argue the point that no other country besides America plays in The World Series with a person who cannot spell.
