The idea being that HIV does not necessarily lead to AIDS, that AIDS is a separate entity that seems to be made possible by HIV infection, if you see what I mean. Can't find the bloody link now though. No pun intended. Only thing is, I also can't remember the source of the information. There’s actually some interesting stuff coming out of the US about the HIV-AIDS non-link. It suggests there may be a bit of the fruit about his own low-hanging fecundity.
