Golden Globes Cancelled. Oscars in Doubt. Great!
Jan 9th, 2008 | By Bock | Category: FilmGreat news! The Golden Globe Awards have been cancelled and with any luck the Oscars might be canned as well. God bless the Writers’ Guild of America (even if they are a bunch of self-important, talentless cliché-mongers who have inflicted decades of predictable drivel on the tv-watching and cinema-going public).
Now that I’m not going to see the Golden Globes, my appetite is whetted. I can’t wait to not see this year’s Oscars. I can’t wait to not see a parade of shallow, self-regarding, uninteresting, coked-out nobodies staggering up the red carpet in dresses that cost enough to feed a small planet. I can’t wait to miss some smarmy non-comedian tuxedo-lizard firing pre-processed autocue jokes at a ballroomful of drunken, steroid-pumped Hollywood junkie-neurotics.
Fuck the whole lot of them!
Maybe this year, for a change, we won’t have to put up with the gigantic smugfest that is Hollywood telling the rest of us how simply fabulous it is. Maybe this year, for a change, Hollywood can go fuck itself.
Maybe this is a harbinger of something better and perhaps for a change we can look forward to a year of real people. Without the cocaine, and the silicon tits, and the steroids, and the lobotomies, and the PR agents, and the clichéed scripting, and the FX and the illusion and all the rest of the mindless fucking pap that Hollywood has been feeding us all these years.
To repeat: is this a disaster?

I dunno. I kind of like the Oscars. I don’t get all excited about it but if it’s on and I’m not doing anything else, I’ll probably take a look. It’s a guilty pleasure.

I’ve always watched the Oscars but I think skipping them this year is a welcomed dose of reality.
And I’m super pissed that I didn’t plan on attending the Blog Awards. Sniff.

When are the blog awards on? I may be in d’oul sod end of Feb start of March, and given Aer Lingus pulling out of Shannon I might have to fly into Ath Cliath anyhow.

I agree that its a good thing that these back patting charades are to be cancelled for the year ,but..there are casualties..
America has produce some fine tv shows over the last few years and these islands in a sea of banality will be the victims of the strike..

i am only glad that the 5th and final season of THe Wire was completed in time becuase it is hands down the finest tv show of the last 10 years (also criminally ignored both in the states and here where it was fucked to the 11.30 on a monday night slot on TG4 for some reason)

Oh dear, no Oscars? Now I’ll miss watching it on the TV I haven’t had in over 10 years anyway. This is messing with my mind (such as it is). I guess the only thing to do now is miss watching one of those therapy shows that’s broadcast on the TV that I haven’t had in over 10 years anyway.
Funny, and here I always thought “Golden Globes” referred to those two things almost not hidden away underneath those horridly expensive low cut evening gowns.

Tim: The Golden Globes are film awards by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. They follow the same format (best picture, best actor …) and they’re widely seen as a close indication of how the Oscars will be awarded. This year, they were cancelled due to the writers’ strike, and it looks as though the Oscars might be cancelled for the same reason.
