Madeleine McCann: British Press Apologises At Last

Posted on Wednesday, March 19, 2008

British papers the Daily Express and Star have finally published front-page apologies acknowledging that the parents of Madeleine McCann had nothing to do with the child’s disappearance.

Do you remember reading about this here?  I was attacked by some people for having the temerity to suggest that the McCanns were innocent, having been convicted by the court of ignorant public opinion, and I’m glad that the pigs of the worst press in the world have had to grovel.

But it wasn’t only in the gutter press that drunken fools flung groundless accusations at the McCanns.

The internet was worse, with the most retarded troglodytes flinging accusations at these bereaved parents. All you need to do is look at some of the comments in the Bock posts I’ve linked to at the end of this.

These vile accusations were thrown without the slightest evidence that the McCanns were guilty of anything except being bereaved and heartbroken.

You know what I find hard to stomach?  The Daily Express and the Star would happily refer to other people as scum.

Star

Sorry

The Daily Star today makes a wholehearted apology to Kate and Gerry McCann for stories suggesting the couple were responsible for, or may be responsible for, the death of their daughter Madeleine and for covering it up.

We now recognise that such a suggestion is absolutely untrue and that Kate and Gerry are completely innocent of any involvement in their daughter’s disappearance.

Express

Kate and Gerry McCann: Sorry

The Daily Express today takes the unprecedented step of making a front-page apology to Kate and Gerry McCann.

We do so because we accept that a number of articles in the newspaper have suggested that the couple caused the death of their missing daughter Madeleine and then covered it up.

We acknowledge that there is no evidence whatsoever to support this theory and that Kate and Gerry are completely innocent of any involvement in their daughter’s disappearance.

We trust that the suspicion that has clouded their lives for many months will soon be lifted.

I remember last year on hols in the Canaries and seeing posters of two young children who were missing and of course the McCanns were in my head. If only the media could put positive energy into the tragedies they report. Like the McCanns I too would be shouting from the rooftops. Does common sense go out the door when gutter newspapers land on our doorstep.

Somehow the Sunday Sport or Star (as I didn’t look but just saw as I was buying ‘better papers’) were running a headline: Shannon - My Exclusive Story. I was flabberghasted.

On the other hand, they remain suspects according to Portuguese law, Bock.
But my primary concern as far as that case goes (given nearly a year has gone by, it’s almost certain the poor child is no longer living) is that children disappear every day who aren’t pretty and blonde with rich parents with media connections and their own PR people, and we don’t even get to hear about them.

I stopped visiting some blogs at the time when they seemed to become obsessive about the McCanns. I couldn’t stomach the self righteous lynch-mob attitude, it was making me sick.

What’s happened to the McCanns is a Godawful tragedy. That they were accused and dragged through the gutter-press on top of that is horrific. I agree with Manuel, the only language these rags understand is losing money. I’m not for excessive payouts in general but in this case these papers should be made to hurt for the damage they’ve done. It’s disgusting.

There is freedom of speech. The McCanns and friends seem to have different opinions of the night
Maddy supposedly disappeared. Lots of kids disappear and are forgotten about. IMO the McCanns have asked for all the innuendo.

Camille: Where did you get the idea that there’s freedom of speech? There’s no such thing, without consequences.

Freedom of speech is one thing. Freedom to fling vicious accusations without evidence is another matter.

There’s nothing like the fear of Multi million pound libel judgments to make someone apologise.

That’s uncalled for Bock, leave Heather Mills out of it. Her £30 million settlement is just recompense, surely?

As for the McCann case… to my mind it’s pretty much a perfect amalgam of bad policing, bad journalism and bad parenting.

And when the papers’ accountants do the sums they may reckon a settlement is money well-spent when balanced against circulation and attendant revenue. Unless they get done for punitive damages in court.

I resisted the temptatiohn to do a cheap punning post on foot of the McCartney - Mills case. On balance, I’d be a bit of a heel to do something like that.

Now that she’s footloose and knee deep in Beatle dosh I wonder will she do a runner from the UK given her popularity status there?

Wouldn’t surprise me if she has a pad in the foothills near the heel of Italy, somewhere nice and quiet to put up her foot.

The McCann’s might not have fooled you, but you’re fooling yourself.

It’s not obvious that they did anything, except in your fevered brain.

You have no information at all about this case, yet you keep coming back here making accusations about the McCanns that you can’t back up with evidence.

I already told you this the last time you came on here with this ignorant nonsense.

    Stop it.

The McCanns IMO have asked for all this. I don’t there has ever been anything like this before, has there. Agree, freedom of speech has its consequences, but the McCanns would have been far more prudent to have not said much, not had a blog (Gerry’s), not had a spokesman, not set up a fund straight away. In fact, they have brought it upon themselves, I feel. Why have they put themselves into the limelight. Not much said about Maddy.

  26. Bock
    March 19th, 2008

Sorry. They didn’t bring it on themselves. Their child was taken and there’s absolutely no evidence they had anything to do with it.

You seem to be saying they’re guilty of imprudence. If I was made to suffer for every imprudent act in my life, I’d be in deep trouble, and I imagine you might have made one or two errors as well.

    Who hasn’t misjudged a situation?

Nobody deserves the shit thrown at the McCanns by scum sections of the Press, and by others who ought to know better.

I just remember a very widely publicised case in Australia..Azaria Chamberlain disappeared on a camping trip at Ayers Rock in the Northern Territory.Apparantly taken by a dingo in the 80s.
Well Lindy Chamberlain didn’t show enough grief at the loss of her 6 week old baby, and the country crucified her because of it.
The investigation was a sham, inexperienced investigators looking no further then Lindy.
She was charged and found guilty at her trial.
Later this was overturned and she was set free.
She was compensated with an amount of dollars, and ended up leaving Australia.
I don’t think she killed her baby, but a huge number of people still believe she did.All because of her emotional response.
She was one of the first people to lend her support to the McCanns.
People are so quick to judge without knowing the facts.
I doubt they’ll ever find Madeleine, I’m sure she’s been sold off somewhere, sorry to say.
The world is full of sickos.
