A father and mother were seen on Wednesday last, and the fact can be testified beyond all question, thankfully accepting a dole of cold boiled potatoes at a door in this street, The mother had an infant in her arms and she must have known it was affected by hunger she could not intelligibly express, but she looked her thanks, and she at once peeled some of the cold tubers and fed her child. The Father received the remainder of the offering, and with some apparent feeling of shame scooped them into his pocket, probably the poor fellow had plenty once in his northern home, and only yielded to physical craving when he accepted the kind gratuity" Some of the Norwegian visitors were in a distressed state and accepted food where ever they could. Imagine 400 people setting out to cross the Atlantic in a wooden sailing ship. It took the emigrant ship from April the 8th to July 27th to get to Canada. And we would freak today about being stranded overnight in an airport! Nice story Bock.

Nowadays, if a boat load of emigrants were to dock up at Limerick, or indeed, any of our ports, they would be quarantined, tagged and then detained until their ship was ready for departure. Meanwhile, the local residents would be giving out about the cost of holding these people with welfare seekers complaining that the government would rather spend money on non-nationals than their own. I've no sectarian intention, just that most welfare societies and causes in Ireland, right up to the 1960s, were organised along denominational lines. And so close to the famine too. Not to be sectarian but it's noticeable that the great majority of donors are almost certainly adherents of the Church of Ireland, including a few Palatine names.
