Euro 2008 Russia vs Spain. With Politics And Mass-Murder

Not for me. No. No, it’s all right. Fear not. Bock is fine.
No indeed. I just had to be there for someone else, but it meant I didn’t get a chance to watch a whole lot of soccer, so unfortunately, I’m not in a position to give you a blow-by-blow account of the Spain-Russia match.
But you’re used to that by now. Here’s what happened: Spain beat Russia by 3 goals to nil. The end. Fuck it. Let’s go on with this talk of politics.
You know something? I’m very impressed with the way former, and not-so-former, totalitarian states have risen to the top of the European Championships. Look who made it to the final: Spain and Germany! Isn’t it wonderful?
Only last week, we had Croatia slugging it out with the Russians, who just got kicked out in the semi-finals tonight, by Spain. Russia, for God’s sake! And Spain!
Last night, we had the Germans, a former totalitarian nation, kicking out Turkey, a country that currently denies its own murder of millions.
Oh for fucksake, it’s marvellous, but at the same time there’s something horribly European about the whole thing (if you exclude the Turks, which I hope we will, for a very long time). Something a bit brooding and passive-aggressive. A bit Catholic and a bit Orthodox, with a slightly Ottoman flavour.
Not good. Too much of Old Europe in there.
We need Baptists and Mormons in this fucking game. I think we should get the Americans into Euro 2012. They wouldn’t fuck around. They’d get the CIA on the job, the spooks would identify any dangerous opponents and before you know it, there would be a planeload of America-hating, Muslim terrorist suspect European footballers on their way to Gitmo for a spot of waterboarding and extraordinary rendition.

I look forward to the final of 2012 in the new world order. When we get the Yanks playing in the European Championships, it won’t just be miserable old European fascists and Nazis whose wars are long finished. No.
Not only will we have a crowd of militaristic fuckers who actually nuked somebody instead of just threatening it. No indeed.
We’ll have a bunch who continue to invade whole countries, take their oil and kill their populations in the name of freedom.
