Satanic Gardening

Posted on Tuesday, June 10, 2008

I’ve created three circular spaces where people can sit and talk, or contemplate or just get drunk.  One has a circular stone seat. It’s the oldest and it’s all overgrown with ivy.  Another has a place where you can light a fire at night and mutter imprecations to yourself if you want.  The newest will eventually have a little waterfall and you’ll be able to listen to the babbling rill as you try to shoot the Koi carp with a specially-adapted Taser.

Bullet is raking small sticks into a big pile, I’m standing there, supervising and we’re just talking shite as usual.

Did you ever listen to the Raconteurs? says Bullet.

That’s Jack White’s band? I reply.  Don’t forget that little heap.

I won’t.  They’re a really good band.

I must check them out, I say.  I love the Stripes anyway.  What do you think we should do with the corners of the garden?

Elements?

That’s what I was thinking, I agree.  Fire, Water, Earth and Air.

Yeah, Bullet mutters.  We have three circles now, in three different corners.  Where do you want these sticks?

In there under the tree.  We’ll let them dry out and we can burn them later in the year.  I’m inclined to leave the fourth corner alone.

No circle?

No.

Bullet frowns.  So that’s what?  Fire, Water and Earth?

Yeah.  Is Jack still playing music with Meg?

Yeah.

Strange set-up there.

Yeah.  Shite drummer too.  What about Air?

Well there’s no circle, right?

Right.

That can be Air, I tell him.

Oh right.

By the way, Bullet, do you know what a raconteur is?

Nah.  Some kind of marsupial?

I pause to look into my soul.  After all, this is my son, and I love him dearly.  Maybe we need a fifth circle, I murmur as I trace out a pentangle on the grass.

nice idea, might do something similar some day.

I’d like to have enough space to carve my own sculptures, however as it is I’m renting in dublin city centre so it could be a while….

Earth wind and fire Bock, the fucking best ever ever disco band, is that who you are subliminally building a shrine, a boogie wonderland to. Or is that the satanic bit?

Rather than the circles of Hell you could do an Audi garden, or given the year that’s in it you could do an Olympic one. More work though.
