Tom Waits Concert - Dublin 2008

Posted on Wednesday, July 30, 2008

We’re all off to see Tom Waits on Friday night but I won’t be able to bring you pics because they don’t allow cameras.  Anyway, I’ll try to do a bit of a write-up for you after I recover.

It’s hard to know what to expect from this fellow.  I’ll tell you later which Tom Waits turns up.

Already there seems to be some controversy because of his ticketing policy, with a lot of people holding valid tickets unable to get in.  I hope he lets me in.

Update

I’m just home.  Tired and sweaty, I need a shower and a shave.

Maybe I’ll get a chance to write a report on this later or maybe I won’t, but I think it’s safe to say I have mixed feeling about Tom Waits.

I should have ignored all their warnings and brought the goddam camera.  Shit!

All I managed was a few phone pictures.

Whats the story with the restrictive admission policy - How is he planning to thwart the touts.

You have to give your name when you buy the ticket. Then you have to produce a passport or driving licence to get in.

So all tickets have to be bought for a specific persons name - what if something turns up and you cant go, the ticket is dead and non transferrable to a friend. What a load of bollox.

What if your 12 and you dont have a passport or driving licence.

That’s right. And if you buy a pair of tickets as a gift for other people, they can’t get in unless you go with them and show your ID at the door.

I am surprised Tom Waits seems cool- but apparently he is a freak

He’s probably a freak, but then again, who isn’t?

Went to the Wednesday gig. People brought their cameras anyway. Or used their phones to try and film bits on the quiet so the security guards didn’t see.

Both tickets were in my husband’s name and they just checked his passport to make sure it was correct - they didn’t bother with me.

Tom Waits was on top form by the way. Where the hell does that voice come from?

Looking forward to hearing what you think of the Friday gig. Enjoy.

I’m going on Friday too. Can’t wait.

Don’t see what the big deal about the anti-touting measures is to be honest. The whole thing was pretty transparent so people who bought tickets as gifts (or wanted to transfer them etc) obviously didn’t check the regulations. I queued up to buy mine and the staff in the shop were at pains to point out the restrictions.

Enough moaning - let the singing dog do his stuff!

I was there last night, there was absolutely no bother with tickets… Mine had my name on BOTH of them, and i was getting all worried that the lad i’d brought wouldn’t get in. They didn’t ID anyway as far as I could see.
And Tom Waits: mesmerising, enthralling, any other adjective like that.
    Have a great time!
