A Tale of Three European Cities

Posted on Wednesday, October 15, 2008

My friend The Nut was in Brussels for the weekend and he spotted these folks.

It reminds me of a thing my poor old mother used to say to me when I was a little kid:  If you don’t get sense, you’ll end up playing the world’s largest balalaika on a street corner in Brussels

Ah, the old people.  If only we’d listened to them.  You know, funnily enough, I never really liked Brussels.

God, I need a break from all this shit.  Politics is getting to me, and events.  Events, dear boy!   I’m becoming grumpy and paranoid.  Short-tempered, sarcastic, narky and aggressive.  Impatient.

I was thinking of going to Barcelona next week for a day or two.  What do you reckon?  I was thinking I might just wander around the city, taking pictures of Gaudí masterpieces and talking shit to complete strangers.  Just a couple of days to decompress before flinging myself back into the maelstrom for another while.  Oh but wait!  I forgot there’s more.  Aren’t we, a crowd of us, going to Krakow in December?

So.  Barcelona and Krakow.  That should cheer us up, unless I go and see Auschwitz, which I probably will, being me.

Oh!  Another thing I nearly forgot.  We’re going to France in January for the Munster - Montauban game.  Woo hoo!

As to politics, turn off the t.v. and radio, don’t read papers and get thee to the highest point in Barcelona where Manuel will be waiting with Basil the rat after his Sumo wrestling lesson.

Forget Krakow for the moment, sure it’s beautiful and there’s a genuine Leonardo Da Vinci there but the Poles are dull and it’s not a patch on Barcelona.

I’ve been to Auschwitz in the last year, not a good memory but not a happy one if you follow me… worth doing.

    Jannie — Hotel booked.

    A Fhear Aniar-Aneas — I’m going to both.

Savannah — There’s no need for a decision. It’s Barcelona next week and Krakow in December. Then in January we’re off to France for the rugby.

Owen — Yeah. I don’t think I could visit Krakow without going the extra mile and seeing Auschwitz.

It’s just as I suspected Bock! You lead the life of an international playboy dropping into Barca as and when, maybe a weekend in Krakow here and there. Sigh, le life!

    Send us a postcard, toots!

You say you never liked Brussels, well neither did I until I discovered you can stir fry them in chilli oil and soya sauce - delicious.

De Fan - the girl was not exceptionally small, apart from the obvious. The balalaika was bloody enormous. i took the shot and lent it under license to Monsieur Bock in exchange for the loan of an oil tanker.
