Palin vs Biden Vice-Presidential Debate

Oct 3rd, 2008 | By Bock | Category: Politics, World

It hasn’t happened yet, but it will shortly. I was hoping to stay up long enough to watch, but unfortunately I have to get a young fella out of bed for school, so I’m going to miss it live.  (I have kids to look after, Sarah).

Never mind.  We already had a taster of what’s to come.

I heard an interviewer earlier asking both the VP candidates about Cheney. What was his worst moment and what was his best?

Biden hit for touch.  Stating the obvious, he said that he admired Cheney’s determination, or something equally anodyne.  In Biden’s view, the worst Cheney moment was the decision to invade Iraq.

All right.  Fair enough.  That’s a big one, though we could discuss alternatives, such as the dismantling of democracy, but let’s not quibble.

Sarah’s worst Cheney moment?  Duck hunting.

Truly this woman is a worthy beauty-contest runner-up.

  1. I really wanted to watch the debate too. i’m sure they’ll pick out some choice clips for the news later. I heard on the radio earlier that she was counting a fuel stop in shannon amongst her foreign policy experiences…….this is an insane situation

  2. It was cringe-making. Sarah sounded like a teenager in school who’d memorised a half page from a text-book.

  3. I bet it was. I reckon she’ll still fare well in the up-coming popularity contest though.

  4. ok, was a bit tired when i watched the debate. however i’m pretty sure that sarah gave the same answer to a lot of her questions. it was a rambling mantra about being a mayor, a governor, a soccer mum, an oil regulator (least thats what i think she said, if i wrong not too worry.like sarah somebody tomorrow will have the facts and figures and i can look at it then) john mccain being a maverick, a ticket that would lower taxes and create jobs. she definately memorised a few lines from that half page. were the debaters not asked at one stage what they thought their achilles heel was? sounded to me like they were, if so, she used her mantra as an answer.
joe on the other hand, had a lot of facts and figures. and used the opportunity to attack mccain. also getting digs in at cheney.not sure if he was being a gentleman or trying to avoid coming across at being patronising. but he never went in for the kill with palin. closest he came to doing that was his remark that the role of the VP is defined in the constitution. “cheney and others should know that”
the scariest thing about the debate is the thought that she makes bush look like a member of mensa and is only a heartbeat away from being president.

  5. Almost as cringe-worthy as an episode of “Little House on the Prairie”…..and the sight of that fuckin’ thing drove me to drink on many a wet Sunday afternoon (for which I have never thanked them properly ’til now).

Sweet Jumpin’ Jesus, when she took “time out” to say hello to the Third Graders at Wassalla High or whatever I thought I’d accidentally hit the remote button over to ‘Telly-Bingo’.

Please tell me this mom and apple-pie folksy shit doesn’t count for anything with voters.

  6. I’d say they’re lapping it up Hoof……lots of them anyway.

  7. Asd far as i could tell, Bible Spice didn’t answer any of the questions, but instead kept repeating the same formula about hockey moms and Joe Sixpack.

Biden came across as articulate and well informed and therefore I’d say he’s screwed. The Americans don’t want facts. They want fries with their feelings.

  8. No Hoof we are not lapping it up lol, most americans seen it for what it was! a well rehearsed say the same thing ten different ways but dont hang yourself production.she never answered a question instead redirected it back to “her expertise”Oil regulation?
Biden on the other hand should and could have filleted her, but he was being cautious and most likely scared of being patronizing or sexist. It is been seen a sucess because she did ok she stood her ground she played with the big boys, no one cares really its not likely to help them much, initally she got some of the Hilary votes but they have since realized the two women have nothing in common.Joe biden is a very charismatic smart man he is very seasoned on the senate floor and very well liked he has a very similar style to Bill Clinton, I dont think her chirppy chearleading approach has much effect.

  9. No Bock, we want Biden .We want Barack and Biden the bb.The only way she will get in is if they fix it (like before when Gore won).I hope Ireland wants the same for us, I dont think Sarah knows where it is you must not need her “Oil regulation” got any seventeen year olds that got no sex ed and are now pregnant and WILL get married shes good at that too.

  10. As it did the Friday before – the best came afterwards. The ‘anal-yses’.
Unsurpassable this one by an ‘embedded journalist’:

‘Only 20 percent found Biden better than expected, but 84 percent found Palin better than expected. So she was much better here.’

  11. I saw the thing live and was fixated by the pain-in-the-neck Hockey Mom who sounded like she’d been up all night cramming for her Junior Cert. And throwing up the lot in no fixed order. With winks and “doggone its”.

    Christ on a bike …

Biden could have ripped her apart, but I gather he was restraining himself in order to be a ‘gentleman’. They say he can be a loose cannon, so I reckon he was warned not to let fly and wade into a “sweet, pretty, Washington-outsider without much experience”, in case it “played badly” and he came across as a bully.

If the Dipstick and Lipstick ticket win this one I’ll eat my laptop. Or you can give me the name of a good Swiss clinic for assisted suicide. I’ll probably have company.

  12. Biden played it according to the game plan, which was correct. Palin’s selection was the most cynical and exploitative use of the gender card I’ve ever seen, but unfortunately it works. Biden couldn’t afford to tear this idiot to pieces, even though it would have been an easy job.

Taking idiots to pieces doesn’t play well on TV, especially folksy, cute, hockey-mom idiots.

  13. “Palin’s selection was the most cynical and exploitative use of the gender card I’ve ever seen”

Agreed. And what a scary prospect she is. Oh well, roll on November. The waiting is the worst, like for a dental appointment.
