… Ah, why would I not be surprised, Bock? And I suppose, even sentencing democrats :) of this kind to severest swearboarding would change nothing.
The peace of the night.

Mr Robber and like-minded friends,
Re: A request to Bock and his contributors for help.
I have an American friend that I’ve recently started corresponding with again. She is about to vote in support of the McCain/Palin ticket in a few short weeks.
(I’m sorry for taking up your time with this and I’ve no doubt I’ll receive the appropriate treatment if this interruption is deemed inappropriate but I’m running out of ideas and time.)
My friend is both educated and well-travelled and it is for this reason I was sickened to find out that her primary reason for voting for this ticket is because of Palin’s involvement. In Palin she sees the “Washington outsider who could change things”, and “a mother who I can identify with”! This is basically the same Republican bullshit that Fox News, and the like, is peddling. What baffles me about my friend, and what contradicts what I said earlier about her (“educated and well-travelled” i.e. intelligent), is that she seems to believe this shite! The media spin in her area; a) paints these people as saviours and b) has been relentless. There is almost no balanced information, through the media at least, to present the other argument or to provide an objective critic of the GOP candidates.
I took it on myself to provide this information. The first part of my plan (and what I thought would be the easiest) was to show Palin up to be the incompetent, and now corrupt, airhead that she is. So far, over a series of six or seven emails I have failed. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. It would be too easy to say ‘my friend is an idiot’ and wash my hands of the matter – not to mention lose a vote.
So, I’ve come out of a happy existence as a ‘lurker’ to ask for ideas as to how to go about presenting the right information in the right way to change my friend’s mind (and curb the growth of my forming ulcer at the though of what could happen if these Republicans win, again).
This election result, in my very humble option, could prove to be one of the most globally important elections in history given the shit the next president will have to deal with, especially internationally. A steady hand (hovering over The Button) seems to be what’s required to resolve America’s problems at home and abroad and to say ‘I don’t see any of those qualities in McCain or Palin’ is as generous as I can be to that pair.
Again, sorry if this isn’t the business of this site but, like me, I believe that the majority of the contributors on these pages (that don’t already have a right to vote) would like an opportunity to vote – changing my friends mind may be as close as we’ll get.
Are you interested?
Am I out of order to right this kind of (slightly?) off topic comment on your blog Bock?
Many Thanks.

I’m afraid there’s no hope. Your friend is an idiot.
Find two other people who are not idiots and persuade them instead.

Unfortunately you’re probably right but I’d like to think there’s still time.
Buenas noches.

Tell her to learn Standard (Mandarin) Chinese . She will get on better with her new rulers soon.

There are two possibilities for your friend.
1. She has been paying attention to what Palin stands for and agrees with a Fascist agenda.
2. She has not been paying attention at all to what is going on around her in the USSA and is complacent and happy just chatting up distant pixels in far off lands.
Neither possibility speaks well for her.

I’m fearful for Obama as I feel that this idiot is not alone.

I worry about what hateful nutters like this guy and worse might do if Obama wins.
The misinformation is incredible for people who only get their news from Fox or conservative radio. The New Yorker this week has an article citing a fourth grade bloody teacher from Ohio as saying Obama wasn’t Christian and was half Arab.
Half of this country is completely cut off from the other half. We have different news sources, we watch different shows, read different papers adn magazines and visit different websites. We do not understand each other at all. However, I think in this case there might be a good deal of willful misunderstanding going on.

Mr.T
“Pixels in a far distant land” A Lord of the rings moment perhaps? Although I can see where you are coming from. McCain thinks Spain is in South America! We Pixels shop in New York and Boston every weekend.
Interesting to note the good ol’ boy all American hero disposed of his mascot to a child. I wonder if he spent his youth in Nam.

Virgin Commenter, your friend is not an idiot, they are just kow-towed and uninformed like many of the huddled masses in the States. I’ve found that Mr. Teddy Bear are the rarest breed of all, a true fool.
Thankfully 99.99% of the US population are not Mr. Bear.
Those that voted Bush 2 in have been led up the garden path by the “GOP” and Fox “News”.
Time and time again the lies have dripped from the “media outlets” like spit from a salivating pigs tusks.
It seems to be the Hydra that the Democrats of America are fighting this time round.
They have to be rubbing their eyes in disbelief.
First they hunker down and wait out the Burning Bush and then this McCain / Palin monster crops up, breathing hateful fire and brimstone like it was going out of fashion. Which, thankfully, like most forms of racism, it is.
But fear not, it does look like, from an outsiders point of view, that the Republican Elephant is dead. The pygmies have won. The unleashing of Palin and her own peculiar brand of shite is nothing, merely a queue-ing up of the right wing of the “GOP” for THEIR run at the White House in 4 years. The dying trashes of a doomed beast. Finally brought to it’s knees by the many tipped spears of the good people.
But…
There is no simple answer or easy path (other than maybe a healthy dose of psiloscybin mushrooms) for the enlightenment of your friend.
But there are some simple questions that you could pose them to get their thoughts turning away from the fear and loathing that the last 10 years have wrought upon not only their country, but all the other countries of this cruel world. From Iraq, Afghanistan to Somalia, Romania, Poland, and Bulgaria, Senegal, Ghana, Mali, and Sierra Leone to Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates. Even right here in Shannon, Ireland we’ve had US troops coming through. There are 700 overseas US bases right now. But I digress;
Here would be my questions to your friend;
First, if McCain and Palin are elected, will there be ANY REAL SUBSTANTIAL change of foreign policy by America? And I do mean REAL CHANGE, not LIP SERVICE!
Second, if McCain and Palin are elected, will there be ANY REAL change of economic policy by America?
Third, if McCain and Palin are elected, will there be ANY REAL change of envionment policy by America?
Fourth, if McCain and Palin are elected, will there be ANY REAL change of domestic policy by America?
Fifth, if McCain and Palin are elected, will the rich get richer in their America?
Sixth, if McCain and Palin are elected will America be a “safer” place to live in for your friend?
Finally, if an Obama / Biden ticket get’s the White House how many of the above will be true?
If the answers to any of these questions is yes, then they should vote with their conscience.
In my opinion, if your friend wants more of the same belligerence, intimidation, empire building fear and loathing that has surfaced during the last ten years since Clinton’s BJ and the coming of the great Republican beast’s semi-police state then they should of course follow their conscience and vote for more oil drilling in Alaska, less taxation on the rich, less health care for the poor, less social care for the elderly and infirm, less social care for veterans, more war, more death, more intolerance.
But, if they think, “Hey, maybe, just maybe this Obama guy ‘aint full of crap! Maybe he might make a difference!”
Then they HAVE to vote Obama / Biden.
Either way, GET THEM TO VOTE!!!!
I do wonder, and have wondered for the past four and a half years; if Ireland had a guy like Barack Obama as Taoiseach, how different would our country be?
October 13th, 2008
the guy in the youtube video looks like a kiddie fiddler.

He certainly does. Straight out of Central Casting.
Send down a creepy pervert and make it fast. Oh, and a stuffed monkey!

Huron,
I am not so optimistic as you. Remember, 50% of us are of below average intelligence.
October 15th, 2008
Tell her to read that recent Naomi Woolf article which I’m too stupid to know how to link to.
October 15th, 2008
Do you mean this one?
October 15th, 2008
As a U.S. citizen, can I just say that I fear — really fear — what is happening to the U.S. and where it is headed? There’s a perverse wind blowing, a big “up yours” attitude toward both what are perceived as “intellectuals” in the U.S. and the rest of the world in general, particularly Europe, to whom the average American feels inferior.

Many thanks to huron and co.
Stay between the ditches.

There is absolutely no reason for the average American to feel inferior to anyone! We are all in the same muck. The piece of filth at the top of this posting should feel inferior to an earthworm, however I am of the opinion that he would feel superior to Albert Einstein (given that A.E. was just a German Jew).
The answer to Americas problem, and indeed the World’s problem is in your hands ! I hope you make the right decision.

Yes we can. Yes you did!
