First Barbecue of 2009

Apr 26th, 2009 | By Bock | Category: My life

You might be wondering why I’m so quiet, and not ranting or raving or making much noise at all.

Well that would be because I’m a small bit worn out.  We had a big barbecue yesterday.  It was in the pissing rain, but I cunningly created the illusion of sunshine by setting up a gazebo and lighting a charcoal barbecue.  And by encouraging everyone to swallow as much beer as possible.

My teenaged son displays a worrying ability to outdrink me, as does his sister, but that’s for another day.

I did a lot of cooking, based on my carnivorous proclivities, but other people brought pavlovas and cakes and nachos and cheese dips and all the usual fripperies you find at an event where people are just coming and going.  I made bbq chicken on skewers with my special recipe which I might share with you during the week.  And then I did spicy beef shish-kebabs, with my other secret recipe, and then I did burgers and all the usual sausages and stuff like that, with the usual relishes and sauces and everything of that sort.

We had much wine, and as the evening closed in, the children, who are not really children any more, broke out a few guitars and everyone got quietly sozzled, but mostly me, because I was at the wine since lunchtime.

Earlyish to bed, bewildered.

  1. food, fire, and shelter you are better off with them.
    Stay away from those machines.
There is something wonderful about a day like that, drinking, talking shite, food, music and the darkness slowly creeping in.

  2. Bock excellent “we are here for a good time. Not for a long time” We might get a Summer this year. There again pigs may fly.

  3. Good food, good drink, good company, friends, family ……. perfect.

  4. @Gary

The way this virus thing is going you may be seeing flying pigs earlier than you expected.

  5. Good on you Bock. BBQ season has come to an end down here (New Zealand) but glad to hear someone out there is burning a bit of livestock and bending the old arm. Keep up the good work!

  6. nothing like a BBQ!
Bock, I admire your endeavor to make ‘the sunshine come out’. :)
Hopefully you’ll feel inclined to share a recipe or twa. ;)

  7. I certainly will. Probably doing a bit of cooking tomorrow, so I might take a few pics as well.

  8. sounds unbelievably like my sunday. skewered bbq chicken and all

  9. Just remember, when it comes to drinking, bbq, and friends and the cops show up, you don’t necessarily have to be able to outrun the police; you just have to outrun one of your friends.
