I was on hoildays in Croatia a few years back, and in a small town we were wondering around the shops as you do. The fellow who ran one of these small shops in a small town on the Adratic asked if we were english. I said no we were Irish, with that he asked how shels were doing. This man knew more about league of Ireland than anyone I ever met in Ireland.
When I asked how? He explained, he betted on football all the time, for the winter he had all the big leagues across europe, but for the summer the LOI was the only football to bet on.
Which might explain a lot.

Sports betting is a multi billion dollar industry worldwide. A few years back a player (team A) in one of Europes major leagues was questioned as to why he booted the ball straight into touch from the kick off. Nothing could really be proved, midfielders miscue passes all the time anyway. However, it transpired that over 100 million dollars was placed throughout in the Far East on (team b) getting the first throw in that match.
