Here’s an idea with potential, dreamed up by one of the Bock Collective. Saint Val is organising a singles evening on the 16th February in the Black Fig Bistro. For €30, you’ll enjoy a five-course meal prepared by chef Noel Keane, using fresh local produce, and laid out like a banquet. It will involve food and maybe a bit of flirting, some frolics, a bit of fun. Who knows? The world is your lobster.
Each course should last no more than about twenty minutes, after which the guys will be invited to move on to the next table to chat with a new bunch of ladies so that diners meet as many people as possible. After that it’s on to a late bar for folk to mingle even more.
According to Val, “the problem with weekend eating out is that the restaurants are packed and you can’t get a table”.
Offering attractive packages, and different restaurants for each event, Val plans to get people back into eating out mid-week, and she reckons it beats the hell out of online dating, which of course it wouldn’t take Einstein to figure out. But sharing a meal is always a great way to set people at ease and these nights will be informal as well as fun. You can come as an individual or in a group of friends, and Val is quick to emphasise that there’s no pressure. “This isn’t speed dating and it’s not one-to-ones. You can chat with anybody you like, and there will be no press, so you won’t see your name on line or in the local paper”.
Val’s plan is to set up a club online and let people know about events, as well as dinners. There will also be cooking classes, farm walks, foraging and general foodiness.
