Oxegen Line-Up Announced.

I had a quick look at the Oxegen line-up out of curiosity.  The list is here.

I’m thinking, Jesus Christ, there’s what? One, two, three, four … sixteen, seventeen … twenty-three, twenty-four, twenty-five DJs.

And besides the guys playing records, you have Snoop Dogg – how cool is that?  Ready to pop a cap in yo ass, mufukka.

snoop dogg

This is a music festival?   I know people like DJs, but do you like them enough to spend a weekend in a field  listening to twenty-five of them?  Well, I suppose it depends on the constituency.  A quick trawl through the Young People in my life reveals one strong consensus: none of them will be going to Oxegen this year.

Why? Simple answer — too many scobies.

Look at the list  If this isn’t a recipe for building Scobe Central, I don’t know what is.   The Swedish House Mafia farce happened over one single night and it showed what happens when you concentrate so many scobies in one place.  This one is over a whole weekend.

It’s interesting to compare the line-ups over the years.  Some of them are listed here.

Oxegen

And so on and so on.  This year, we have DJs and rappers.

All I can say is, pack your stab vest.

Me?  I’ll see you at Electric Picnic

2008 looks the best: I will always envy my brother for going to Download.

  2.

I’m just putting this out there. If you look at the demographic they’re aiming for here. Is it mainly aimed at scobes because those more educated in that age bracket are more likely to be living abroad?

  3.

The Rubber Bandits have a funny reply. (Dunno if it was them or not) http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151536508057200&set=a.122175317199.100283.45998897199&type=1

  4.

Now I understand why Shatter & the Garda Commissioner (AKA Shatters Puppet) graduated all those Garda Reserves lately…. The state will save a fortune sending in these brave volunteers to tackle all of Ireland’s finest tracksuit wearing, johnny blue smoking, dutch gold drinking, soverign ring wearing, skangers!!!

  5.

I noticed this blogging site has started to get annoyingly pedantic and anally analytically dissecting of all topics recently – Jesus Christ, lighten up it’s a music festival, get a grip? Yesterday gays were entitled to marriage, today the “underclass” are responsible for having (a) attracted a far less attractive line-up than previous years and (b) deterring “the more well to do” from attending the festival? Why shouldn’t your rather derogatory termed “scobes” enjoy a festival – is music not for all? Too much today?

  6.

I don’t remember saying anything about the underclass or the well-to-do. Are you reading the same site as I am?

  7.

The last time I asked what a “scobe” was, I was told it was a derogatory Limerick expression for stereotypical council tenant underclass, the underbelly that scourges beautiful places like Limerick – may be I have been misinformed, if so, I apologise, if not then I stand by my point!!

  8.

I certainly did not say anything about council tenants. That must be coming from your own unconscious prejudices. Nor did I mention the underclass when defining scobe.

Anyone, of any socio-economic status can qualify as a scobe by their attitudes and behaviour.

  9.

I informed you of the definition of “scobe” that had been given to me – the term being new to me when I first read it! I do not believe that I have suggested you provided this definition (you see, here we go with the anal dissection again)!! As for having any prejudicial thinking on council tenants, I do not and nor have I held such “unconscious prejudices”. Listen, this is another thread that is going to go round and round, my initial comment still stands – non-interest/attendance is inferred because the “scobes” may go and you yourself state “All I can say is, pack your stab vest”.

  10.

    @Jabes

Look Bock is going to do a dance to make out that he didn’t mean what you think he means. but he does, and so do I and so do most people, its ruined because of scobes, even limerick is ruined because of scobes, and it is definately more of an attitude than any socio-economic label.

Some people in limerick today had their illegally held horses taken away, so what did they do, they went to the nearest bundle of houses near Ballynanty and smashed every one of their windows. if you ask who did this, you’ll be told, scobes!!!! and you’ll see them at oxegen, enjoy!

    get over your bleeding heart

  11.

John — Don’t speak for me, please.

  12.

John, you are very passive aggressive – do you need some therapy??

My comment, if you all now “dissect” what I said it is very simple – is music not for everyone?

  13.

Some reaction to the line up suggests that Oxygen as an Irish cultural indicator akin to Glastonbury for the UK is tarnished. This is not the case. Perhaps in the diversity of previous Oxygen line-ups we imagined we were partaking in some version of sophisticated unified European festival culture that reflected Ahearn’s glossy intention but this wake up call dispels that. The Venn diagram arrived at by the promoters for this years event have found a financial sweet spot in the overlap between the dreams of the mega festival Tomorrowland and the woozy righteousness of the yearly rag week invasion of supermacs.
Those who posted the original snide memes landing potential bad behavior at one section of the youth should not forget that the promoters will have no qualms in rolling out some version of supply and demand to justify this line up. Compliance could be addressed as well as the full voice of those who want an Irish version of Tomorrowland hasn’t come through in the wider media yet.

  14.

So our best and brightest won’t be buying tickets because they’re in OZ or the US or wherever while they are avoiding the recession. While the scobes of course haven’t moved and will lap this braindead oonce oonce shit up and save up a months dole for the occasion? Supply and demand certainly, however I can’t agree with where the demand is coming from to concentrate this amount of troublemakers into one site for an entire weekend. If the Swedish House Mafia gig is anything to go by no parents with an ounce of sense will let their kids within an asses roar of Punchestown. People will dress it up as an attack on electronic music, teenagers etc etc , but as an aficionado of some of the more “intelligent” forms of the genre I find that an insult to the genuine talent therein. Let’s make no qualms about it, David Guetta, Calvin Harris et al are the lowest common denominator of all forms of music personified, and in most cases attract the lowest common denominator of society. Not everyone from a council estate is a scobe, scobes can come from any estate Jabes.

  15.

Showing your age there Bock. You aint down with the yoof no more.

Also, just because Oxygen caters to a younger crowd doesn’t mean it’s only Scobes going to it.

In general the live music festival scene is gone to the dogs – Most of the bands were in their prime many years ago and the youth of today rightly have no interest in them. Why would any young people be interested in Fat Boy Slim, Bjork, David Byrne, Franz Ferdinand – It’s music their parents listened to so why would they.

So get your Sunday best Addidas on and hit Oxygen and get down with the kids

  16.

Well, I did a quick survey of the yoof around me and none of them are too impressed either.

  17.

Did you do a quick survey of the Scobes around you to see how impressed they are?

I have to admit neither line up is impressive and it will be interesting to see if Oxygen sells enough tickets. I can see a lot of concerned parents barring their kids from going to it, which is a pity.

  18.

    Dear Bock,
I have been reading the above and there is a term being used which I do not understand. I would be very grateful if you could supply me with a definition of the word “SCOBIE” or “SCOBE”

    Thanking You,
    Yours Sincerely,
    Fonsie

  19.

    No

  20.

    Dear Bock,
I am somewhat surprised at the rudeness of your response, I asked a question to which I am sure, one as intelligent as yourself has the answer. Therefore I am prepared to excuse your rudeness on the grounds that you may have had some family emergency, or maybe you were on your way to “sink a few creamy ones” and were in danger of missing the last bus. I will accept any reasonable excuse you have to offer and you might reply to my query, re the definition, whenever you have more time.
    Thanking You,
    Yours Sincererly,
    Fonsie

  21.

Fonsie, you’re trolling, and I’m getting tired of it.

Do you want to keep commenting here? If you don’t, I’m not especially bothered, so it’s your decision.

Keep acting the fool and we’ll say goodbye to you once and for all.

  22.

I honestly dong think its a great lineup, but yet im not prepared to pound it into the ground just because its not great, il still go to oxegen and ep just for the love of all music, no matter where and what you do there will always be nutcases, please people enuf of the music sobbery

  23.

    Snobbery*

  24.

Won’t it be a bit ruf?

  25.

Actually we didn’t have Bowie in 2004, cos that was the year he had his heart scare and pulled out. The Darkness took his slot.

I remember because that was the year I let a crying Italian chap in, who claimed to have traveled all the way just to see Bowie. Didn’t have the heart to tell him the news.

  26.

Speaking as regular in the Irish festival scene for the last 10 years I can safely say that Bock is absolutely right, there will be blood at poxegen this year. Call it due to scobes or whatever you want, but I would bet a hundred euro that it’s going to be bedlam and the papers will have a field day by the monday. Electronic music at festivals will become a dirty subject again, there might even be some new anti-fun legislation drafted because the politicians just love to jump on anything that may distract the people from the terrible job they’re doing.
I’m attending/playing at Life Festival in belvedere house at the end of the month. Life is in it’s essence a dance music festival at which I will certainly see 25+ djs and live electronic acts but the only trouble at it any of the years has been in the car park due to scumbags from Mullingar dropping down to see what this ‘hippy music festival’ is all about…

  27.

Is this the festival which one Irish broadsheet – under festival tips – famously advised that “alcohol is limited to 48 cans per person”?

Only in Ireland would the words 48 cans (of beer) and limited be contained in the same sentence without setting off alarm bells.

Young Paddy would also buy 48 big cans. For there would be no point in shamefully sitting there with 48 smaller cans, like a steamer, while your mates ridicule you with their big cans.

He’d also reckon that it he could hook up with a sad bastard that doesn’t drink that he could improve his quota to 96 cans, going forward, if he could get aforementioned to claim his individual quota.

Said advise also advised that there would be an off-licence on site. As it should be, because after you’ve downed your quota and the quota ostensibly claimed by the sad bastard, sensibly as it says on the can, in under 48 hours, you’ll obviously have an awful throat on you for drink.

Meantime, and remember kids, don’t ever buy drugs.

Sign a recording contract and get the R&R men to buy them for you!
